The history of the Websac began at the end of the 19th century in the Eastern Bohemian town of Žďár, Czech Republic (formerly, Czechoslovakia), about 100 km from Prague, the capital city. At that time, Vavřín Křcíl started developing Websac and named it after its finishing “Saariense,” a mix of the Latin and German name for the location of its origin (Saar). The inventor grew up in poverty-stricken conditions and, at the age of 11, he learnt to earn money for his family by weaving. In 1923, Křcíl organized an exhibition of his products, mostly accessories like hairnets etc. He has huge success, so he was able to distribute his products throughout Czechoslovakia and to foreign countries. Unfortunately, after a short period of time, short haircuts became fashionable with the ladies and hairnets were no longer in demand, so he was forced to develop a totally new product for the market.
Soon, the new product that he introduced, proved to be much more useful and profitable than his original production of hairnets. Vavřín Křcíl started producing Websac in his factory in large numbers, using artificial silk yarn. In no time, the Websac had a fixed foothold in the Czechoslovakian market. The product was cheap to produce and inexpensive to buy as well as light and compact for easy storage. He produced a lot of different variations, such as shopping bags, reticules, holdalls and many others used as fashion and sports accessories. After a short time, this Czechoslovakian hit was exported to several European countries, such as Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland, and also to Canada and a few French colonies. His company was very successful from the mid until late 1930s.
The upcoming war and the “Munich Dictate” interrupted the business. However, the production continued until 1948 when Vavřín Křcíl’s factory was nationalized by the new Communist regime like all other profitable and private enterprises.
